Before founding Mia Senior Living, Ms. Bretos served as Florida Secretary for Aging & Adult Services and as AARP State Legislative Representative for Florida, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. She has drafted and successfully advocated for bills creating Medicaid funding for services in seven states, and in 2003 introduced a national demonstration project to the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development to bring assisted living services to seniors and disabled adults in public housing.

A longtime leader in aging and long-term care, Ms. Bretos has chaired the Florida Women’s Commission and the Hispanic Affairs Commission and served on numerous boards, including the Alzheimer’s Association and the Area Agency on Aging. A graduate of Oberlin College with an MBA from the University of New South Wales, she also attended Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. Her work bringing assisted living to public housing earned her one of the first $100,000 Purpose Prize Awards (2006) and an Ashoka Fellowship (2009). She is also a recipient of the National Hispana Leadership Award.
